Loomis documents the ideas and experiments of American decentralists including Arthur Morgan, Henry George, Benjamin Tucker, Paul Goodman, and Ralph Borsodi. All shared a common belief in restoring community self-reliance and bringing economic and social activities back to a human scale. Their experiments played a pivotal role in introducing and supporting organic agriculture, consumer rights, worker-owned cooperatives, community land trusts, alternative education, the ecological use of resources, consensus decision making, and alternative currency and nonexploitive banking.
